Southerly and westerly facing windows in Texas receive plenty of thermal energy. For single pane windows especially, solar screens are commonly used to reduce the heat infiltration (when double pane low-E isn’t called for).

Problem: Using WA8.6, we get inconsistent results making solar screens rank in the audit when they would seem to be called for.

Does anyone know a trick to get solar screens to ALWAYS show up in the audit?

The Weatherization Assistant performs calculations to determine if solar screens are economical for each individual window in a home. Recommendations can vary from window to window, and from house to house, for many reasons, including: the orientation of the window, the type of existing window, the amount of external shading already present on the window, the efficiency of the air conditioning system, the efficiency of the heating system (solar screens reduce free heat from the sun in the winter which NEAT and MHEA take into account), other window treatments being recommended for that window, the cost being estimated for the solar screen, etc. There is no "trick" to always get solar screens to be recommended, and there shouldn't be because solar screens are not always economical when the factors identified above are taken into account.
