Summary

The greater Chicago area has a lack of standardized training for residential retrofit workers within the low-income weatherization program. The need for a consistently trained workforce is even greater for the many firms that local and state governments hope to engage in energy efficiency retrofits in the coming years. This project seeks to enhance the hands-on training component of weatherization auditors and technicians by partnering with three community colleges to outfit weatherization training centers and deliver instruction to new and existing workers. The testing and installation labs will provide hands-on learning that is essential to training a high-quality certified workforce. Facilities will employ qualified trainers who will teach to the Department of Energy (DOE) national weatherization core competencies, using the standardized weatherization training curriculum. The enhanced training centers will aim to decrease the length of on-the-job training. Training will be geared to include participants at various levels, from basic installation workers through supervisors, inspectors, and auditors to managers and the training personnel themselves. Ultimately, this project will help provide weatherization expertise to a region with 5.5 million residents in order to rapidly scale up energy efficiency measures to the government-assisted and private-sector building construction and retrofit sectors.
