In southeast Alaska, joblessness and high energy costs disproportionately affect rural communities, decreasing economic opportunities and leading to out-migration. The Southeast Alaska Weatherization Training Center (SAWTC) is a central point for southeast Alaska weatherization training, providing local jobs, primarily for rural residents with limited economic opportunities, and ensuring timely weatherization of low-income homes. The focus of this project is to expand weatherization services for low-income households in southeast Alaska by providing accelerated, standardized, multitiered weatherization training that will lead to careers in weatherization-related occupations. The program aims to provide Alaskans with 11 weatherization training units based on individual training needs and demand for weatherization workers, create 25 paid on-the-job apprenticeships, employ trained personnel to address the thousands of identified low-income housing units in need of weatherization, and provide an ongoing weatherization training center and test home.
