Summary

The weatherization industry across the Southeast lacks consistency and often struggles with climate-sensitive best practice solutions. The residential energy efficiency industry is not well established. There are not enough certified weatherization professionals nor skilled trainers in the region and prior to Weatherization Asssistance Program Training Center and Program Funding Opportunity Announcement funded through the Recovery Act, there was no comprehensive weatherization training center south of Virginia. The main goal of the Southeast Weatherization and Energy Efficiency Training (SWEET) Center is to create and retain weatherization and energy-efficiency jobs. Southface will provide direct training services and will establish diverse curricula and nationally recognized certifications to create a career ladder for weatherization and residential building professionals. Engaging technical colleges, industry-sponsored educational providers, and others in train-the-trainer activities will cement a lasting training infrastructure throughout the region. The Center will use multiple teaching modalities in order to achieve maximum impact. The project will also serve as a catalyst to introduce Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) guidelines into other Recovery Act-related residential energy efficiency activities and build a sustainable foundation for a weatherization and energy efficiency training program.
